The soil of Cambodia is mostly sandy loam and sandy soil, which is suitable for planting cassava. Cassava in Cambodia is generally planted on flat land, which can be planted twice a year. It can be planted from March to June in rainy season and from October to November in dry season. The cassava planting areas in Cambodia are mainly distributed in Ratanakiri, kampong Cham and Kratie provinces in the northeast, and the growing areas of cassava are increasing in padai Mianzhi, Battambang, pongtong, bailing, Preah Vihear, Otto Mianzhi, Siem Reap and Chai Chen provinces. Battambang province is the largest cassava producing area in Cambodia, with a planting area of 155424 hectares.
Cassava is one of the main crops most liked by Cambodian farmers. The growth rate of cassava planting area ranks second, and rice ranks first. According to the annual report of the Ministry of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, although the price of cassava is falling or there is no market, the planting area of cassava in Cambodia is still increasing.
In 2015, the planting area of cassava in Cambodia was 574000 ha, an increase of 10% year-on-year. By the end of 2016, the planting area of cassava in Cambodia increased to 771000 ha. According to the Ministry of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, the planting area of cassava in Cambodia is 675000 hectares. According to the survey report of CIAT, Cambodia is the eighth largest cassava producing country in the world and the fourth largest cassava producing country in Southeast Asia. In 2017, Cambodia produced 14.8 million tons of cassava.
According to the export data of the Ministry of agriculture, Cambodia's cassava exporting countries increased from 4 countries (China, Thailand, France and Vietnam) in 2014 to 16 countries and regions in 2016, namely China, Thailand, France, Vietnam, Canada, the United Kingdom, Finland, Lithuania, India, Italy, South Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United States and Taiwan, China. Cambodia's cassava export volume ranks eighth in the world and fourth in the region. Cambodia's cassava export increased from 220000 tons in 2012 to 3.6 million tons in 2016. In the first nine months of 2017, 1.8 million tons of cassava were exported. According to the Ministry of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, Cambodia exported 2.26 million tons of dried cassava chips in 2015, including 1.78 million tons from Thailand, 150000 tons from China and 330000 tons from Vietnam. From January to September 2017, Cambodia exported 2.3 million tons of dry cassava, while the export volume of fresh cassava was about 750000 tons.
