Laos has outstanding biodiversity and many rare species. It is estimated that there are at least 200 crop species planted by farmers in Laos, about 500 non wood product tree species, nearly 500 fish species and at least 1600 plant species with medicinal value. Laos is the second most important source center of glutinous rice in the world, with more than 13000 indigenous rice varieties.  The biodiversity of Laos is of great significance to the protection of its food security.
